1. Veterans Memorial Park

Veterans Memorial Park is near the heart of Mt. Airy. It’s within walking distance of the city’s historic downtown.

As the name suggests, this park is a memorial for those who have served in any war. It is open to veterans, their families, and the community to play, camp, and attend events.

Veterans Memorial Park is open to a variety of camping styles. There are primitive campsites for tents as well as both full hookup and no hookup sites for RVs and trailers.

Although Veterans Memorial Park is by no means an RV resort, it does provide a few creature comforts like showers and Wi-Fi.

There are several events held throughout the summer and fall each year at Veterans Memorial Park. These are the Old Time and Bluegrass Fiddlers Convention in June, the Surry County Agricultural Fair in September, and a flea market and car show the weekend of the Mount Airy Autumn Leaves Festival. Check the calendar for specific dates each year since campsites fill up quickly during these events.

2. Mayberry Campground

Mayberry Campground is about 10 minutes south of downtown Mt. Airy.

This private RV resort is one of the largest in the area with over 100 campsites. These campsites have full hookups and can accommodate everything from tents to big rigs. Most of the campsites include cable and all of the sites have Wi-Fi.

Campsites are available to rent on a nightly, weekly, or monthly basis.

Mayberry Campground offers a variety of entertainment options. Within the campground there are two ponds for catch-and-release fishing (no boats or swimming allowed), community fire pits, and a playground for kids. Even the four-legged kids have a dedicated place to play in the campground’s dog park.

This RV resort also provides all of the basic needs for a longer-term stay like showers, laundry, and a camp store.

3. Beechnut Family Campground

Beechnut Family Campground is a Christian-run campground 15 minutes west of downtown Mt. Airy.

This private, pet-friendly campground has 50 large campsites which are suitable for all types of camping equipment. The sites consist of full hookup sites, sites with water and electric, and sites for tents.

Beechnut Family Campground has fun for campers of all ages. For water-lovers, the campground has a pool with a snackbar and not one but THREE fishing ponds. There are also tons of amenities for active fun including a jumping pillow, ping pong, a volleyball court, and a GaGa pit.

4. Pilot Mountain State Park Campground

Pilot Mountain State Park offers the only campground on public land within a 30-minute drive of Mt. Airy.

The state park is only 15 minutes southeast of Mt. Airy.

There are two sections of Pilot Mountain State Park connected by a 6.5-mile corridor: the mountain section (which contains Pilot Mountain) and a river section (which borders the Yadkin River). Both sections of the park have reservable campsites.

The main campground near Pilot Mountain has 40 campsites. These campsites can host tents, trailers, and RVs, but note that none of the sites have hookups. 

If you’re interested in a more remote camping experience, the river section of Pilot Mountain State Park has 2 designated campsites.

These 2 campsites are not accessible by car. They can only be accessed by paddling a mile along the Yadkin River or by a half-mile hike. Therefore, these campsites can only host tent campers.

Both sections of the park include several miles of hiking trails, including the statewide Mountains-to-Sea trail.

5. Greystone RV Park

If you’d like to camp near Pilot Mountain but would rather stay in an RV park, check out Greystone RV Park.

Greystone RV Park is just outside Pilot Mountain State Park, about a 20-minute drive southeast of Mt. Airy.

This is a small, gated campground with only 10 campsites. All of the campsites have full hookups and are for RV camping only.

Although the campground is small, it still offers a number of amenities for a quiet camping trip. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire pit with views of Pilot Mountain. The campground also has a pond for catch-and-release fishing.

Campsites are available for nightly, weekly, or monthly stays.

6. Jomeokee Campground

Jomeokee Campground is located just past Pilot Mountain State Park, about 20 minutes southeast of Mt. Airy.

This campground gets its name from the language of the Native Americans who originally inhabited this region. Jomeokee translates to “great guide” or “pilot”, referring to nearby Pilot Mountain which can be seen from the campground.

The 70 campsites at Jomeokee Campground can accommodate all kinds of camping equipment from tents and hammocks to RVs as long as 28 feet.

One of the main draws of Jomeokee Campground is its music festivals. The park has hosted many music events since its creation in the 1970s and is a destination for bluegrass fans from all over the region.

There are plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities in the area too, so it’s a great place to camp whether or not a music festival is scheduled during your stay at the park.

Jomeokee Campground only allows reservations for up to 2 weeks at a time. So if you’re looking for a seasonal campground near Mt. Airy, you’ll want to check out a different campground on this list.

7. Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground

Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground is one of several campgrounds in Fancy Gap, VA.

The campground is located 25 minutes north of Mount Airy. It can be found right off the Blue Ridge Parkway between mileposts 202 and 203.

This private, pet-friendly campground is one of the smallest campgrounds near Fancy Gap. There are only 13 full hookup RV sites and 5 tent sites.

Note that only one tent site is a drive-in site; you must park at the end of the road and walk down the road a bit to get to the other tent sites.

There are other ways to stay the night at Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground. You’ll also find cabins and motel rooms on this 22-acre campground.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly campground in Fancy Gap, VA, check out the Fancy Gap-Blue Ridge Parkway KOA.

Just a mile down the road from Utts Campground, the KOA is also a quick 20-minute drive from Mt. Airy.

The KOA in Fancy Gap has about 60 campsites for RVs and 4 campsites for tents. Campsites are available to reserve for short-term and monthly stays.

Campers who stay at the Fancy Gap-Blue Ridge Parkway KOA will have access to everything they need for their camping trip, like propane, firewood, and a camp store. You’ll camp in comfort with amenities like Wi-Fi and cable.

Holly Ridge Family Campground is 30 minutes south of Mt. Airy near Boonville, NC.

This private, family-friendly campground is a good choice for any camping style. The campground has almost 100 campsites which range from tent sites to full hookup sites for RVs. The campsites are primarily for short-term stays but some campsites are available on a monthly basis.

Holly Ridge Family Campground offers all of the basics needed for a camping trip in their general store plus the comforts of home like Wi-Fi, showers, and laundry.
